How to Spot Fake Electronics & Mobile Accessories in India

Fake chargers, batteries and accessories can overheat or catch fire. How to check certification marks, weight, finish and seller before you buy.

6-Point Verification Checklist

📱

#1Check IMEI/serial number

Verify IMEI at imei.info or the manufacturer's website. For Apple: checkcoverage.apple.com. For Samsung: samsung.com/in/support/

✅

#2Verify BIS certification

All electronics sold in India must have BIS certification mark. Check at bis.gov.in. Products without BIS mark are illegal to sell.

⚖️

#3Weight and build quality

Genuine products have specific weights (Apple charger: 68g exactly). Counterfeits are usually lighter due to missing safety components inside.

⚡

#4Check the charging cable

Genuine Apple Lightning cables have "Designed by Apple in California" + serial number. Genuine USB-C cables should be MFi/USB-IF certified.

💻

#5Software verification

Connect to the device — genuine accessories are recognized by the OS. iPhone shows "This accessory may not be supported" for fake cables.

🏪

#6Buy from authorized channels

Buy from brand stores, authorized resellers (Croma, Reliance Digital), or official online stores. Avoid too-good-to-be-true deals on social media.

Found a Counterfeit? Report It

Report to BIS (bis.gov.in), Consumer Helpline 1915, or file a complaint with the brand's anti-counterfeit team.

About Counterfeit Products in India

India loses an estimated $16 billion annually to counterfeit goods (FICCI CASCADE 2022). The problem spans pharmaceuticals, FMCG, electronics, auto parts, and luxury goods. Counterfeit products not only cause financial losses to legitimate manufacturers but also pose serious health and safety risks to consumers.

The Indian government has taken steps including the Drugs & Cosmetics (Amendment) Act increasing penalties, FSSAI's food safety surveillance program, and BIS mandatory certification for electronics. However, enforcement remains a challenge, making consumer awareness the first line of defense.
