How to Spot Fake Cosmetics & Skincare in India
Fake cosmetics can contain harmful metals and bacteria. A step-by-step check of packaging, batch codes, seals, texture and seller before you buy.
6-Point Verification Checklist
#1Check batch codes on brand websites
Most major brands have batch code verification. Sites like checkcosmetic.net and checkfresh.com decode manufacturing dates from batch codes.
#2Inspect packaging weight and texture
Genuine products have substantial packaging. Counterfeits feel lighter, cheaper, and often have slightly different fonts or logo placement.
#3Smell test
Genuine products have consistent fragrance. Counterfeits often have a chemical, plastic, or overly strong artificial scent.
#4Color consistency test
Apply a small amount โ genuine products have smooth, consistent color. Counterfeits may have granular texture, uneven color, or separate on application.
#5Verify IS/BIS mark
Cosmetics sold in India must comply with BIS standards (IS 15153). Check for the ISI mark. Use our BIS Mark Verifier tool.
#6Check seller authorization
Buy from authorized retailers. Check the brand's official website for their authorized seller list. Amazon "Sold by" should be the brand or authorized distributor.
Found a Counterfeit? Report It
Report to CDSCO (cosmetics fall under Drugs & Cosmetics Act), state Drug Controller, or Consumer Helpline 1915.

About Counterfeit Products in India
India loses an estimated $16 billion annually to counterfeit goods (FICCI CASCADE 2022). The problem spans pharmaceuticals, FMCG, electronics, auto parts, and luxury goods. Counterfeit products not only cause financial losses to legitimate manufacturers but also pose serious health and safety risks to consumers.
The Indian government has taken steps including the Drugs & Cosmetics (Amendment) Act increasing penalties, FSSAI's food safety surveillance program, and BIS mandatory certification for electronics. However, enforcement remains a challenge, making consumer awareness the first line of defense.
