Under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, DPCO 2013, the NPPA fixes a ceiling price for medicines on the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). No retailer may sell a scheduled medicine above its ceiling price plus applicable GST. For non-scheduled medicines, companies may raise the price by no more than 10% a year.
How to Check If You Were Overcharged
- Find the medicine's salt, strength, and pack size on the strip.
- Look up the official ceiling price on Pharma Sahi Daam.
- Add applicable GST to the ceiling price to get the maximum legal retail price.
- Compare it with the MRP printed on the pack and what you actually paid.
How to Report Overcharging
If a medicine is priced above its ceiling, you can complain to NPPA through Pharma Jan Samadhan. Keep your bill and the medicine strip as evidence. Overcharging on scheduled drugs is a violation that NPPA can act on, including recovery of the overcharged amount with interest.
