What Is Mean Kinetic Temperature?

Mean Kinetic Temperature (MKT) is a single calculated temperature that captures the cumulative thermal stress on a product over a period of storage or transit. Because chemical degradation accelerates exponentially with heat (Arrhenius behaviour), a short hot excursion damages a product more than a simple average suggests — so regulators require MKT, not a plain mean, when evaluating storage data.

The Haynes Equation

This tool uses the Haynes (1971) equation referenced in USP and ICH Q1A: MKT = (ΔH/R) ÷ −ln of the mean of e−ΔH/(R·T), where ΔH is the activation energy, R is the gas constant (8.314 J/mol·K), and each T is a reading in kelvin. The pharmaceutical default ΔH is 83.144 kJ/mol.

When MKT Matters

  • Warehouse qualification — demonstrating a storage area holds within its labelled condition.
  • Cold-chain / shipping lanes — evaluating logger data after transit.
  • Excursion assessment — judging whether a temperature deviation affected product quality.
  • Stability programmes — reporting the effective storage temperature of an ongoing study.
